Letter From the CEO

When you are reporting on key trends or initiatives impacting healthcare consumerism and patient-centric care, please think of TelaDoc. Bringing to every American – wherever they live or work – more affordable, direct access to high quality medical care.

The model is simple: A national network of state licensed, board certified primary care physicians (PCPs) is available 24/7 to provide cross coverage care designed to diagnose and resolve routine medical issues over the telephone for our members age 12 and up. Physicians may prescribe medications (no DEA regulated substances) if appropriate.

TelaDoc addresses the three most significant issues in health care:

  • Access. TelaDoc physicians are available 24/7/365 and are currently averaging less than 40 minutes call back time nationwide. Because the care comes over the telephone, a patient can be virtually anywhere.
  • Cost Control . TelaDoc has built an efficient delivery system that has a $35 price point for every encounter. The TelaDoc engine is so efficient that even though the patient has a lower fee, the physician makes more money.
  • Portability of Medical Records . The Company adheres to the philosophy that the patient should have access to medical records any time, from anywhere. In maintaining compliance with this doctrine of portability, TelaDoc has developed a CCR compliant medical record that can be downloaded, printed and faxed any time the patients needs the record.

Did you know? A significant percentage (as high as 65% by some studies) of all PCP visits fall in the category of minor issues that can be treated by a telephone based cross coverage arrangement. Furthermore, even though a relatively small percentage (20% - 25%) of ER visits are non-emergent and can be handled by telephone consult, the dollar savings here can be huge. Internal data has shown 91% of TelaDoc consults result in a diagnosis and/or treatment, suggesting that members understand the scope of their medical issues.

TelaDoc services do not replace the care of the PCP …they complement and enhance the quality of care. TelaDoc physicians are trained and experienced in cross coverage and meet our strict physician credentialing guidelines.

Non-emergent conditions such as upper respiratory infections, allergies or rashes are addressed, offering a convenient option for patients who may be traveling or living in rural areas where there are challenges to accessing medical attention. Life-threatening conditions are referred to the hospital emergency room and all patients are advised to follow up with their PCP.

TelaDoc Physician Credentialing is performed under extremely stringent standards. Beginning in the summer of 2005, the TelaDoc Physician Association made a decision to hire only board certified physicians. All licenses are verified along with credentialing from NPDB and AMA databases.

Quality Assurance (QA) is a priority. We work hard to make certain that physicians are not only well-credentialed but that they are taking care of the member appropriately and effectively. Our QA team performs random checks of all consults and inspires patients to provide feedback. Conversely, we monitor all prescriptions and consults to ensure that patients are not abusing the service. As a result of these rigorous QA processes, we have terminated both patients and physicians who do not adhere to our guidelines.

The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a valuable component of the TelaDoc platform and a key focus for media discussions. Prior to and during each telephone consult, our physicians have access to the patient’s EMR, which is populated with personalized background data that guides the medical consult. This record is updated and available to the individual’s PCP to further enhance the continuity of care. The TelaDoc EMR is capable of being the only medical record a member will need for healthcare. It follows the new CCR standard and is a free benefit of the service. We encourage our members to populate their TelaDoc EMR with charts and blood tests along with data from all of their physicians.

Member satisfaction with TelaDoc services validates consumer receptivity:

  • 95% of members would use the TelaDoc service again or refer to a friend
  • 97% of members satisfied with the service
  • TelaDoc guarantees a doctor consult within three hours or it’s free. Average time is currently under an hour.

Because of our careful development of the process and strict adherence to procedures, we’re also receiving accolades from government and private sectors including these notable individuals:

  • Henry Dreifus, developer of the Smart Card
  • Bruce Quinnell, Former President of the Borders Group
  • Sam Havens, former President of Prudential
  • Nathan Morton, founder and former CEO of CompUSA
  • James Haveman, former Michigan Secretary of Health & (reconstruction) Iraq Health Minister
  • Richard Boxer, Health care policy Advisor for Clinton and Gore
  • Vice Admiral Don Arthur, former Surgeon General of the Navy
  • Jay Sanders, MD, President/CEO, The Global Telemedicine Group
  • …and hundreds of others

TelaDoc’s physician telephone consult services are having a positive impact on the practice of medicine, our nation’s economy and the health status of all those who utilize its services. Many physicians are taking the opportunity to serve patients via cross coverage...employers and individuals are accessing quality care at lower costs…and people are enjoying improved access to care.

As Americans turn to the media for thoughtful insight and accurate information that influences their healthcare decision-making, they will find great value in your understanding of the valuable TelaDoc offering.

Sincerely,

Michael Gorton
